Scottish Coal Collections Project

Coal Mining Collections are held in museums, libraries and archives throughout Scotland. After a survey in 2005 established the existence and the extent of these collections, a cross-sectoral partnership was established to gather collection level descriptions for as many of the collections as possible. This website is the result of that partnership project and it provides a single point of reference for the many researchers interested in this important aspect of Scotland’s industrial past, as well as for professionals working with coal mining collections.

Over 30 organisations have taken part in the project so far, providing information about their institutions, along with descriptions of their coal mining collections. These descriptions detail the extent and variety of material available, and list star items, and the key places and names associated with them. Each institution also provides website addresses and contact details for those seeking further information.

The project has been coordinated by staff at the Scottish Mining Museum and funded by Museums Galleries Scotland, the Coal Authority, Scottish Coal, the Mining Institute of Scotland Trust, the National Union of Mineworkers and the Scottish Coal Industry Special Welfare Fund. The website has been constructed by staff of the Digital Resource Development Team. Through the steering group the project also draws upon the expertise of professionals working with a variety of types of coal collections from throughout Scotland’s coal mining regions.
